initial trip proposal

Proposal for Towson University Metals/Jewelry and Interdisciplinary Crafts spring 2009 trip to Germany

Who: Any interested Towson faculty, students, alumni and friends. Organized by Amy Klainer and Megan Auman.

What: Trip to Munich, Germany and surrounding areas for Schmuck 2009 exhibition. Potential for additional day trips including international jewelry museum in Pforzheim, Germany.

When: Schmuck 2009 dates are March 11-17, 2009. Towson spring break is March 15-22, 2009. Travel dates are still under consideration.

Why: Opportunity for students to gain exposure to international jewelry and design scene and view wide range of international work in person.

Timeline:
Beginning of semester – Amy/faculty announce trip to students
Thursday, October 2 – preliminary meeting for those interested in attending (coincides with Megan’s powder-coating workshop)

Costs:
Preliminary airline ticket search showed flights from JFK to Munich with one stop costing approximately $580 round trip. Hotel costs are still unknown. Additional costs include food and activities, including museum admissions and transportation.
Students may be able to offset costs by applying for travel funding through SGA (through metals club) and grants through the graduate college. Faculty could apply for travel grants.

Potential activities:
Attendance at Schmuck 2009. (web information is minimal – talk to Heidi Lowe for more information)
Day trip to Pforzheim to attend Schmuckmuseum (jewelry museum)
Potential for other side trips to Prague, Czech Rebuplic, Zurich, Switzerland, or Austria.
Additional museums/activities in Munich.
